This 30 Days Safari features visiting Volcanoes national park and Nyungwe forest national park in Rwanda for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking respectively. In Uganda, the safari features visits to Mgahinga national park, Bwindi Impenetrable national park, Queen Elizabeth national park, Kibale national park, and Murchison falls national park for wildlife viewing including primates, forest and savannah wildlife including the rhinos in Ziwa rhino sanctuary.

DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 1: TRANSFER TO VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by a professional tour guide who will take you for a city excursion in and around Kigali. This is to enable you orient yourself with this great country of ‘a thousand hills’. After this excursion, you will embark on the transfer to Ruhengeri via undulating and beautiful terraced hills which shows a clear picture of the general landscape and altitude of Rwanda.

Volcanoes National Park is located 116km about 2-3 hours’ drive so you will arriving in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

DAY 2: GORILLA TREKKING IN VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Having had an early morning tasty breakfast at the lodge, you will start your exciting morning drive to the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters for briefing by park officials and then begin your trek into the indigenous forest in search for the shy mountain endangered gorillas. This trek gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself into the strange but intimate part of the rain-forest where you will hear live calls of colourful birds, chattering of the rare golden monkey, as well as the forest filled with fresh spoor of the mountain elusive populations of buffalo and elephant.

Gorilla trekking tends to last from 2 to 8 hours depending on the day’s gorilla movement. The one hour of direct encounter with the gorillas brings you closer to these ancient apes and their gigantic structure. You will see them forage, play and also have a chance for photography Retreat to the starting point, have lunch at the lodge and later in the evening, you embark on the twin lakes walk exploring the impressive views of Lake Ruhondo and Lake Bulera and the local fishing activity before retiring for dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: GOLDEN MONKEY TRACKING AND MUSANZE CAVES WALK

After breakfast, you will embark on the Golden monkey tracking. You will start by going to the park headquarters at Kinigi for briefing. Thereafter, you will go to the trail head and embark on the search for the golden monkeys that tend to dwell in the Bamboo Zone. The golden monkey tracking experience tends to last 4 hours and is an exciting experience as you watch these golden backed monkeys jumping from stem to stem of the Bamboo and playing hide and seek games.

Retreat from the activity and embark on the Musanze Caves walk to explore the historic caves of Musanze that were formed 65million years ago by the basalt lava flow from the Volcanic Mountains of Sabyinyo and Bisoke. The caves feature 31 entrances and stretch to 2km inside. The caves provided refuge to people in times of war in the pre-colonial Rwanda and even in the 1994 Rwanda genocide.

The cave exploration lasts 2 hours after which you will retire for relaxation, dinner and overnight

DAY 4: TRANSFER TO AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK.

After breakfast, you will drive to Akagera National Park. This journey takes you through the impressive countryside landscapes of Rwanda before making a stop in Kigali for lunch. After lunch, you proceed to Akagera National Park which is a 2½ hour drive passing through the scenic countryside of  Rwamagana where you have chances of encountering the inyambo cows. You will arrive in Akagera National Park in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

DAY 5: GAME DRIVE IN THE MORNING & AFTERNOON BOAT CRUISE ON LAKE IHEMA

After an early breakfast, embark on the thrilling game drive encounter in the savannah landscapes of Akagera National Park. Game drives in Akagera national park are done in safari vehicles starting early morning in search of the leopards, hyenas, and the re-introduced lions. This is because the predators prefer to hunt at night or early morning and then usually go into hiding as the heat from the sun increases. Along the carnivores, enjoy the scenery of this beautiful park and several other animals like elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, zebra and giraffes and birds. The landscape and beautiful wild flowers will make for good pictures for the interested photographer. You will then retreat from the game drive and get to the lodge for relaxation and lunch after which you connect to Lake Ihema for an afternoon boat cruise. Lake Ihema is the second largest lake in Rwanda inhabited by Hippos and Nile crocodile and counts of birds. Birding on Lake Ihema will accord one the pleasure of water species which are otherwise not seen while on the game drive in the Savannah grassland. Thus the boat cruise on this lake presents a memorable encounter on the Rwanda safari.

DAY 6: TRANSFER BACK TO KIGALI

After a relaxed breakfast, you will drive back to Kigali City. There you will take a tour of the genocide memorial. The tour to Kigali genocide memorial allows you to pay tribute to the counts of Rwandese that lost their lives in the bloody genocide that befell Rwanda in 1994. Retreat from the memorial centre and go to the Rwanda Art Museum and the presidential palace museum where you will learn more about the history of Rwanda. Enjoy en-route lunch, dinner and overnight stay at your lodge.

DAY 7: TRANSFER TO UGANDA

DAY 8: GOLDEN MONKEY TRACKING IN MGAHINGA NATIONAL PARK

After eating breakfast, you will go to the headquarters with your packed lunch for the briefing. Depending on the monkeys’ movements, the hiking time ranges from 2 to 5 hours. You will be able to view the rare golden monkeys for an hour. Other primates that may be seen include red tailed monkeys, Vervet monkeys among others. While the exercise is demanding, it is also rewarding.

After this adventure, you will transfer to one of the sectors of Bwindi impenetrable national park with en-route lunch. It’s a 2-3 hours’ drive depending on which Bwindi sector.

DAY 9: GORILLA TREKKING EXPERIENCE

After breakfast and with your packed lunch, you will walk to the park headquarters for briefing about gorilla trekking etiquette and experience. Your guide will take you through all the dos and don’ts while with mountain gorillas and after that, you will be transferred to the starting point of trekking your gorilla family.

Please note that gorilla family allocation depends on your interests, fitness and age. Please inform your guide of your interests and he will try to request for the gorilla family of your choice before you start the trek into the forest. Gorilla trekking can be strenuous and a certain level of fitness is required.  Gorilla trekking can take from 30 minutes to b hours so one needs to prepare for both. During your gorilla trekking adventure, you’ll also enjoy the breath taking natural scenery of Bwindi and a chance to see other fantastic creatures that inhabit Bwindi including monkeys, colourful montane butterflies, and unique forest birds that will have you wishing your trip was a little bit longer.

You will be allowed only one hour of photography and observing mountain gorillas as they go about with their daily day activities and then trek back to the park headquarters to pick your certificates and then have dinner and overnight at your Lodge.

DAY 10: BAMBOO TRAIL

Early in the morning after your breakfast, you will hike through the Bamboo Trail which takes about 7 hours. It involves climbing a steep area of up to the highest point in Rwamunyonyi hill at 2607 meters above sea level. 

As you hike, you will encounter different vegetation and plant species that include the Bamboo forest with over 14 different plant species until when you reach the Afro-montane vegetation zone.  You will also encounter different birds and plant species.

The top of Rwamunyonyi Hill rewards hikers with spectacular view of Lake Bunyonyi and the breathtaking views of the Virunga Volcanoes and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Day 10: Transfer to Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth national park

You will transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park after having breakfast. This is a 4-5 hours’ drive with en-route lunch. Once you arrive at your hotel, you will relax and wait for dinner.

DAY 11: ISHASHA MORNING GAME DRIVE AND BOAT CRUISE ALONG THE KAZINGA CHANNEL

After breakfast, meet your guide for a morning game drive around Ishasha area where you have a chance of seeing the tree climbing lions.

After lunch, you will have a boat cruise experience along the Kazinga channel and into Lake Edward. This cruise will let you pass through a place of the highest concentration of hippos and you may also see many animals drinking at the water’s edge. The cruise also offers a good platform for photography, bird watching, and game viewing

DAY 12: MORNING GAME DRIVE AND TRANSFER TO KIBALE NATIONAL PARK

After an early breakfast, you will drive to the Northern bank of the Queen Elizabeth National Park (Kasenyi) area in search of some wild animals which include: Elephants, Buffalo, and some wild cats, different species of antelopes such water buck, Uganda kobs etc. as well as Savannah birds. After lunch you will drive to Kibale National Park arriving at your lodge in the evening.

DAY 13: CHIMPANZEE HABITUATION EXPERIENCE

Today the forest opens its doors for a sensational chimpanzee tracking experience. After your breakfast, you will have pre-tracking briefing after which you will walk or drive to the trailhead for the start of an unforgettable adventure – hiking in the footsteps of the habituated family of chimpanzees. En-route, your guide will enthral you with stories and facts about the forest and her other inhabitants including other species of primates and birds and other big mammals. Upon sighting the chimpanzees, you will spend an unforgettable one hour with them as they go about their daily life – feeding, playing, grooming, taking care of their young, howling and screeching, in their natural habitat. Besides the chimpanzees, you should also not miss out on the sightings of several other primates that call this forest their home including the black and white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, Grey monkeys. After the chimpanzee encounter which lasts an hour of pure enjoyment return to the park centre where your trekking efforts are rewarded with a trekking certificate. Return back to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon you will enjoy a guided nature walk through the Bigodi wetland.

The Bigodi Swamp Walk is an initiative of the local community and is known for its rich diversity of birds and primates. The path and board walk maybe flooded and muddy after heavy rainfall and gumboots are recommended. This community walk will bring you closer to the local tribe that lives in this area and is about 4km in length taking 3-4 hours at birding pace. Accompanied by a local guide, who can tell you everything about the traditional customs and lifestyle, you will follow the village path and visit a primary school, traditional homesteads and learn more about the crops in the fields. All proceeds from eco-tourism go back to into the community, a conservation project worth supporting.

After this really exciting cultural mash-up you will have had, you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

DAY 14: TRANSFER TO MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, drive to Murchison Falls National Park through small towns, villages and great views of the escarpment arriving late evening. This drive takes you through numerous villages giving you an insight into how ordinary Ugandans live. Still, on this journey, look out for sightings of men and women engaging in economic activities such as gardening, you might also encounter women carrying their little one’s monkey style as they strap them behind their backs. This drive takes about 7-8 hours covering a distance of about 320km. You shall stop for lunch in Masindi and continue to Murchison Falls National Park.

DAY 15: MORNING GAME DRIVE AND BOAT CRUISE

After breakfast, you will go for your morning game drive that will provide you an opportunity of spotting wild game that may include many of the park’s 76 species of mammals including Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Buffalos, Rothschild’s giraffes, spotted hyenas, Jackson’s hartebeests, Hippos, Warthogs, Oribis, Uganda kobs and Waterbucks. You will also have an opportunity to see several of the park’s 451 bird species.

You will then return to the lodge for a lunch break before proceeding to the pier for your two hour boat cruise to the bottom of the falls to witness how river Nile squeezes itself in a 7 meter wide gorge before dropping down while exploding out a 45 meters narrow gorge producing an experience of a lifetime.

On the launch cruise, you will be able to see passing hippos and crocodiles, elephants and waterbuck that come to the river to drink along with numerous birds such as shoebills, Goliath herons, Saddle billed storks, African Jacana, Senegal thick-knee, African quail finch, Squacco heron, kingfishers, skimmers, and Comrants.

Thereafter, you will undertake a challenging but rewarding hike to the top of the falls from where you will be marvelled by the power with which the Nile crashes through the narrow gap in the escarpment with a deafening roar and voluminous spray.

After this exciting afternoon, you will drive back to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and over night

DAY 16: TRANSFER TO KAMPALA/ENTEBBE

After breakfast, you will bid farewell to the lodge and start your journey back to Kampala. You will drive through the flat terrain of central Uganda with beautiful scenery and towns where you will see people going on with their daily life and make a stop en route for lunch. You may decide to visit the Zziwa Rhino sanctuary (optional). Proceed to Entebbe for dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 17: FLY TO NAIROBI AND TRANSFER TO NAIVASHA NATIONAL PARK

Depending on your flight schedule, you will transfer to Entebbe airport for your flight to Nairobi. Upon arrival in Nairobi, meet and greet with our company representative who will also be your safari guide. Thereafter, you will transfer to Naivasha national park where you will have lunch.

Later in the afternoon, you will visit the Crescent Island Game Sanctuary. This sanctuary hosts giraffes, waterbucks, elands, wildebeests, zebras and impalas. It is also a haven for more than 200 species of birds. The lake has a lot of hippos which you can easily spot from the island. Among the resident birds are fish eagles, ospreys, lily-trotters, black crakes and a variety of herons. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 18: VISIT THE HELL’S GATE PARK AND TRANSFER TO MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE

After breakfast, you will drive to entrance of Hell’s gate park. You will get to enjoy the impressive landscape as you drive through the semi-arid world with sheer rugged cliffs and open plains. In Hell’s gate, you can carry out bird watching, rock climbing and trekking through the gorge among the geysers. Later after lunch, you will drive through the Great Rift Valley to Masai Mara game reserve via the beautiful savannah grasslands and plains with magnificent views of Mt. Suswa, Mt. Margaret and Mt. Longonot.

This game reserve is among the 9 wonders of the world and is a renowned tourist destination in Kenya, famous for the wildebeest migration along the Mara River. This is where millions of Wildebeest cross the Mara River from the Serengeti National park of Tanzania to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve of Kenya – an annual spectacular event, which brings along thousands of plains game and predators to the Mara, making the park a beehive of ‘wildlife activities’.

Once there you will rest, have dinner and overnight stay at your lodge.

DAY 19 AND 20: FULL DAY GAME DRIVES IN MASAI MARA

After breakfast, you will have a morning game drive. The rolling grasslands of the Maasai Mara offer ideal game viewing and photographic opportunities and the grassy plains are broken by rocky outcrops which are favourite midday resting places for Lion.

A full day game drive with picnic lunch at the Mara River as you enjoy the scenic view of the crocodiles resting on the brown-muddy river banks gives a remarkable experience.

Late afternoon can be spared for a visit to the Maasai village to be enlightened on the Maasai culture, perhaps enjoy a Maasai cultural dance and then head to the lodge/camp for dinner and overnight.

DAY 21: TRANSFER TO AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, check-out of the lodge and drive to Amboseli national park. It’s a 6-7 hours’ drive with en-route lunch. Amboseli national park is famous for its scenery with a close view of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, which dominates the landscape, and open plains.

On your drive southwards to the park, you will enjoy a scenic view of the beautiful highlands of Kenya. Amboseli National Park is located at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro and has a spectacular view of the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro (weather permitting). It lies 150 miles south-east of Nairobi, very close to the Tanzania border.  When you arrive at your pre-booked Safari Lodge, you will have lunch and if interested, you can enjoy an afternoon game viewing drive in the park.

DAY 22: FULL DAY GAME DRIVE IN AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK

After an early breakfast you will go for an early morning game drives and this will give you opportunity to spot various wildlife in the Park. The park is famed for and is home to the huge herds of the African Elephant. It also plays host to lions, buffaloes, the elusive leopard, wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, a variety of antelopes, and other smaller plains game. During the dry season, it is semi-arid terrains and during the wet season, the seasonal “Amboseli Swamp” becomes home to many species of birds.

In the afternoon, you will do a game drive as well to give you chance to see what you might have missed in the morning and even see more. You will return to your lodge after the game drive for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

DAY 23: TRANSFER TO LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

Breakfast will be served early and depart for Lake Manyara via Arusha for en-route lunch. Though small in size, Lake Manyara National Park has breath taking scenery. It is famous for its lush acacia forest, giant figs and permanent residents to this park include giraffes, elephants, lots of buffaloes and impalas. Special to this park are rare climbing lions and flamingos at the lake shore. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

DAY 24: GAME DRIVE AND TRANSFER TO TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

Early morning after breakfast, you will leave the lodge with packed lunch for the game drive. You will be able to see buffalos, wildebeest and zebra herds congregate on the grassy plains. You will also be able to view Manyara’s tree-climbing lions and impressively tusked elephants.

Have lunch and transfer to Tarangire national park. The park is famous for its diverse landscape with nine different vegetation zone and known for the abundance of baobab trees. The river in the park is usually full of wildlife ranging from a large variety of birds to lions, leopards, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes and, of course, elephants.

You will do an afternoon game drive as you proceed to your accommodation.

DAY 25: FULL DAY GAME DRIVE IN TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast you will have a game drive experience at Tarangire National Park. This park has an interesting ecosystem; it features vast grassy plains, savannah, forest, woodland, lakes and swamps.

Tarangire National Park is an incredible sight to behold. It is home to nearly 500 different bird species making it a must have for bird watchers and also home to over 30 large herbivore animals. The park is characterized by tall and thick baobab trees, swampland, rivers and lakes which means spotting different game as you meander through this incredible expanse of natural beauty. Enjoy your picnic lunch within the park in a picturesque spot.

DAY 26:  TRANSFER TO SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

After an early breakfast, you will drive to the most famous National Park in Tanzania, the Serengeti. It is a long but spectacular drive through the crater highland, making a quick stop at the rim for out of this world view of Ngorongoro crater. It is the home of the Great Migration and to 2 million wildebeests, hundreds of thousands of zebras and all kinds of antelopes including the abundant impalas and Thomson’s gazelles. Continue into the vast plains of the Serengeti, where you’ll hopefully start spotting animals before you get into the park.

Enjoy lunch, relaxation, dinner and overnight at your lodge.

DAY 27 AND 28: FULL DAY GAME DRIVES IN SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

You will spend two full days doing game drives in Serengeti National Park. On each day, you will have breakfast and then go for an amazing game drive at The Serengeti National Park which is world-famous for its ecosystem, natural beauty and huge amount of animals, birds and insects. Expect an incredible backdrop of stunning landscape and see animals such as Thomson’s gazelle, wildebeest, lions, zebra and more. This park is also home to the Serengeti’s Annual Migration which happens every year when animals travel thousands of miles across East Africa. This park is so large that it is actually bigger than some small countries. It sits between The Great Rift Valley, Lake Victoria and Lake Eyasi.

You will be brought back for lunch to the lodge or you may opt for a picnic lunch within the park. Continue the adventure with an afternoon game drive. The word Serengeti means “endless plains” in Maasai and that explains the huge expanse of land you will encounter from forests to jungles and wilderness.  Return for Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

DAY 29: TRANSFER TO NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA

for a rewarding brunch and then with packed lunch embark on the journey to Ngorongoro, the 8th wonder of the Natural World. You will have a stopover at Olduvai Gorge Museum to explore the heritage that surrounds the discovery of early man skull in the 1960s by Dr Leakey.

Proceed to arrive in Ngorongoro for a Crater tour. The panoramic views of the crater while standing at the rim presents good photo opportunities and remarkable memories of the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world.

Descend into the crater floor for an incredible morning of wildlife in one of the most stunning places on Earth. It’s one of the very rare locations in the whole continent where you can witness the black Rhino. The concentration of African wildlife is the greatest in the continent. The crater has a river, several swamps, and a soda lake with a great concentration of flamingos, a forest and open plains.

DAY 30: TRANSFER TO ARUSHA

You will have early breakfast and start on morning game drive in the true Wonder of the Natural World. The Ngorongoro crater has the densest known population of lions, in the rainforest of crater rim are leopards, large elephants, mountain reedbuck, buffalos, spotted hyenas, jackal, rare wild dogs, cheetahs and other animals.

After the game drive, there will be time for a picnic lunch near the beautiful hippo lake. After lunch, you will ascend the crater and exit Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Arusha for drop off at the airport or hotel.
