This 3 Days Nyiragongo Volcano Hike in Congo is a magical journey that will take you to hike the Nyiragongo Volcano one of the most active volcanoes in the world with an elevation of 3,470 m (11,380 ft.) above sea level and positioned within the Virunga Mountains 20km from the town of Goma. Since 1882, it has erupted at least 34 times and the most recent eruptions destroyed half of Goma town. The Volcano has a mountain crater 2km wide with a lava lake.

This 3 Days Nyiragongo Hiking Safari trip is thus designed to avail an adventure hike to this historical volcano involving a night on the Mountain. The safari starts and ends in Kigali with an optional boat cruise on Lake Kivu and a visit to Goma town.

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1: DRIVE FROM KIGALI TO GOMA

Following breakfast at your place of stay in Kigali Rwanda, you will team up with the driver guide who will brief you on the safari. You will then embark on the transfer to Gisenyi town which is the largest town in Lake Kivu towns. The place offers beautiful beach environment suitable for relaxation where you will have some good times because of the beautiful beaches and can have boat cruise from Lake Kivu which offers magnificent sights of endless water views, series of Islands and the overlooking Nyiragongo Volcano.

You will have lunch from Gisenyi and cross the Congo border to Goma town after your meal. Dinner and accommodation from Goma

DAY 2: NYIRAGONGO HIKING TO THE SUMMIT.

The driver will pick you from your hotel very early in the morning and drive you to Virunga national park headquarters for briefing and be given a well knowledgeable guide after which you will be ready to embark on the day long adventure hike to the one of the few remaining active and violent volcanoes on African continent featuring the most fluid and expanse lava lake on global scale. You will then set off for hiking from Kibati starting point, it’ll take around 5 hours to reach the summit of Nyiragongo Mountain. You will pass in steep, muddy and slippery route, thorns and tall trees will be on the way.

Upon arrival at the summit, you will have the beautiful view of the lava lake although best views can be seen at night. The overnight is spent at the crater rim.

DAY 3: DESCEND THE NYIRAGONGO VOLCANO AND TRANSFER TO KIGALI.

Following breakfast, embark on the descending journey back to the starting point where you will meet the driver and return to Goma. If time allows, you will have a city tour of Goma town and the Goma caves and then proceed back to Kigali. Since you will use the same route back, you will have another stop at the Rwanda-Congo border crossing for photo moments, buying souvenirs or to just relax before continuing to Kigali.
